A WITS Leader is willing to Explore points of view.
Exploring points of view is important because everyone is different! That means that two people who are in the same situation can have very different thoughts and feelings about it.
To become a successful problem-solver and a WITS Leader you need to be able to understand other people’s points of view about a situation and to understand it might be quite different than your own. This can help you come up with the best solutions for a situation.
If you want to be a WITS Leader, you need to become really good at exploring different points of view. Here are some tips to help you:
Put yourself in someone else’s shoes – No, you don’t have to actually trade sneakers! Just try to understand what might be going on in other people’s lives or even just in their heads that might cause them to act a certain way. Maybe you’ve had a similar experience so you can understand where they’re coming from. If not, try to imagine what you would think and feel if you were in a similar situation.
Remember that people are like onions – They’ve got a lot of layers! Think of it this way: what people say and do is like the outside of an onion. It’s all you see when you first look at them. If you peel back a layer, you begin to understand what they think and feel. And guess what? Sometimes the two layers don’t match! Imagine you got a fast new bike that you were excited to show your friends. When you did, your friends just said, “So what?” Although their words make it seem like they don’t like your new bike at all, maybe they’re actually feeling jealous or sad because your bike is faster than theirs. Always try to peel back the outer layer of words and actions to consider the thoughts and feelings underneath.
